How to help your child succeed in ballet/dance class?
by Victoria International Ballet Academy
As we begin our new ballet season, we would like to share with you some tips on how you can set your kids up for success this year.
As you know, much of your child’s success depends on having a great teacher and a positive environment, however, it is vital to understand that true success is a 50/50 balance between the efforts of the teacher and the student.
Here are some of our best tips for achieving great results in dance this year.
1. Attendance and punctuality.
This is number one on our list for a reason, children who attend classes consistently show steadier progress and pick up material much faster than those who skip classes. Being on time is a must! Discipline is a large part of what we learn from ballet and dance.
2. Tidy uniform and hair.
As mentioned before discipline is everything in the art of ballet and dance. Make sure your child’s uniform is always clean and hair is pulled back in a neat bun. This is also a form of respect for themselves, the teacher, and the academy.
3. Attitude.
A big portion of your child’s success or failures will depend on his/her attitude and work ethic, not just in ballet but in general. It is important to talk to your kids about respecting the teacher and classmates, being focused in class, memorizing the material learned, and striving for their best in every class.
4. Encouragement
Children need to receive encouragement not only from their teachers but from their parents and close ones. Your child may not demonstrate exercises perfectly, perfection is impossible to achieve, but if you see your child giving it his/her all make sure to applaud their efforts and encourage them to keep going. We believe in your children, and we make sure our teachers give them that confidence too, but there is nothing like the encouraging words from mom and dad.
5. Homework
Just like any other subject studied at school ballet and dance require students attention outside of the studio. At home focus on flexibility, learning and memorizing ballet and dance terminology, and taking down notes and corrections that were given to the student that day.
Registration to our after school ballet and dance programs are still open!
