Information for our students participating in this year’s Production of The Nutcracker

To all parents: the soloists, professional students and Tuesday/Friday class of Victoria have to arrive to Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts Centre at 3 pm. The other dancers have to arrive at least at 5:00 pm, dressed in their light pink tights and shoes. If they perform also on pointe, please make sure they have both sets of their ballet shoes with them. The girls’ hair must be back neatly in a bun at the base of their head. Please no bun wraps or coloured ribbons or barrettes, only ones matching their hair colour. The boys’ hair should be neatly cut. All children should have stage make-up on arrival to the theatre.

There will be parents volunteering to supervise your children in the change rooms and on the way to and from the stage. They will help the children with theatre costumes. On arrival to the theatre, please bring your child to the back main entrance, someone will be there to take children to their change rooms and teachers. No parents will be permitted backstage at any of the performances or during intermissions due to the theatre policies specifying the backstage capacity.

The parents, who signed up to volunteer, have been contacted as per the night(s) when we need their help. Please send us a note if you have changed your plans. If volunteers have any questions about time/date, please contact Lisa Thalassinos at 416-417-3649.

Many children show an interest in dance, music and movement from an early age (some from as soon as they begin walking!) and there is absolutely no reason not to encourage this interest. One of the best ways to support this interest is to enroll the child in a pre-ballet class. Many schools (including the Victoria Ballet Academy) offer pre-ballet classes for children over the age of three. Here the child will be introduced to a world of rhythm and excitement in a loosely structured environment. This will allow them to develop this side of their personality in a fun and creative environment. It will also assist with social skills by involving them with other children and the regular activity will give them a sense of routine that will be invaluable in future years.

Of course, the viability of ballet classes for three year olds will depend a great deal on the individual child. In some cases the child may lack the attention span for classes and it could be best to wait a year or two until they have more focus. This will be a personal decision for the parents and teacher to consider.

The majority of children begin ballet classes between the ages of four and eight. At this age the child is better able to concentrate and will be able to learn effectively. This is usually the best age to work on the child’s posture and to begin to introduce the standard ballet positions. The benefits of ballet classes at this age are significant and will extend into other areas of the child’s development. Learning ballet will improve the child’s concentration, focus and discipline. As with most other physical activities and sports, dance lessons will foster a healthy lifestyle and attitude that will assist the child throughout their life. There is also a great deal of evidence to suggest that children with active lifestyles perform better at school and are generally better behaved.

Ballet classes also give children the opportunity to perform in public and in front of their peers. It is extremely beneficial for a child to become accustomed to this from a young age. This aspect of ballet can also give the child a huge sense of accomplishment and boost their confidence and self-esteem which will serve them well during the rest of their childhood and teenage years. Attending ballet classes from a young age will also have the added bonus of exposing the child to a whole world of music, history and imagination.

The optimal age for beginning ballet classes will vary depending on the specific child, however, it generally ranges from the age of three to 10 years. Nevertheless, if your child expresses an interest in ballet but he or she is over 10, do not fear or give up! With a lot of hard work and dedication it is still possible for them to enjoy a great ballet career.
