Thoughts After The Nutcracker

As parents we are always doing what we believe is best for our children. I think that one of the most important things we want for our children is for them to be happy. But what about the “learning” experiences, the values, the discipline we all know are needed to be a complete, mature, and productive human being? A very interesting, and even ambivalent point, is how we want to protect our children from any harm knowing, at the same time, that it is unimaginable for anybody to grow and mature without experiencing at least some hardship. To me, everything requires an effort. The difference between a fruitful effort and a futile one resides on how much we enjoy what we do to achieve what we want. For my daughter, [...]

Some facts about The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker has been one of the most widely performed ballets in history. It’s first staging took place more than 100 years ago at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in December of 1892. Alexandre Dumas ―writer of Three Musketeers and The Count of Montecristo, among many other works― adapted the tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A Hoffman. The music as it is well known was commissioned to the famous Russian composer Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky by Petipa with whom Tchaikovsky had already worked in Sleeping Beauty. The most popular rendition of the Nutcracker was adapted by Vassily Vainonen, [...]

Victoria Ballet Academy Students Enjoy La Bayadere

This time Ottawa was the centre of our ballet student’s thoughts and excitement as they were anxiously waiting for the presentation of La Bayadere by the Mariinski Theatre. A trip to Ottawa to enjoy what they love best, with special backstage access after a mesmerizing performance, pictures with some of the dancers, skating on the Rideau Canal and a comfortable stay at the Marriot Hotel, was all part of this unforgettable experience. And the joy didn’t end there; once back in Toronto our students were invited and attended a rehearsal of The Swan Lake ballet, performed by the Mariinsky (Kirov) company at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. Also, thanks to a special request put forward by the Academy, our students were allowed to attend a unique ballet class. [...]
